Vinegar Alley

This is up in the depths of Walthamstow Village. Vinegar Alley, takes its name from the two plague pits that were once sited here. One was for the Black Death and the other was for the Great Plague, 1665. The locals would surround the pits with vinegar hoping to help prevent the spread of disease, thus creating an alleyway doused in vinegar. The church yard contains numerous war graves from both of the big ones, it also contains a POW too. I’ll try and look into this further at a later date. I did notice a tombstone with the name’s Henry George and Emily Bailey, I’m wondering if they’re related to the David Bailey, what with him being a local to Leytonstone.
