It was definately Thatcher who closed it, along with a very obliging council who went on to close Larkswood too.
Whipps Cross was clean, and filled from a natural sping, as was Leyton pool... it's numbers were good, and it held 1,250,000 gallons of water, being 122 yards long, 55 yards wide and 12ft deep.
Somewhere I have hundred of pictures, of the lido in summer and winter... in winter some of the lifeguards were employed as watchmen. It was a great and beautiful place to grow up... an oasis for the kids of walthamstow and Leytonstone. I'll try to find some pics...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4005749348490482645.post-86427302599263232852012-09-01T18:59:16.165+01:002012-09-01T18:59:16.165+01:00I went to the Royal Wanstead school and we walked ...I went to the Royal Wanstead school and we walked to the pool for early morning swimming lessons, before breakfast. The reason it closed were due to a number of contributing factors. 1) It wasn't a particularly clean pool due to all the mud. 2) Vandalism 3) General falling of attendance and the decline in popularity of outdoor swimming… My father was actually a member of the council at the time and the pool was becoming too expensive to upkeep.. so nothing to do with the Tories.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
